The coin
The dirham is the silver coin of the Prophet's Madina, peace be upon him: seven dirhams weigh what ten dinars weigh, which puts one dirham at 2.975 grams of silver. This coin carries five of them, 14.875 grams of fine silver. The obverse shows the Kaaba; the reverse carries the verse that permits trade and forbids usury, around the word Peace in the calligraphy of the Dinar Wakala mark. It was the first silver dirham struck in North America, and it holds certification from both the World Islamic Mint and the American Open Currency Standard.
“And Allah has permitted trade and forbidden usury. (Al-Baqarah 2:275)”
