The coin
The dinar of Madina weighed a mithqal: 4.25 grams of gold. Every gold coin struck to the World Islamic Mint standard keeps that weight, so a dinar today is the same measure of gold that paid a debt or a dowry fourteen centuries ago. The 2 dinar carries two of them in one coin, at 8.5 grams of 22 carat gold - the alloy that has kept dinars hard enough to circulate since the Umayyads first struck them.
